    Hi, thanks for answering. Yeah the led is blinking slowly and the disc are spinned down, so I am pretty sure it is not being accessed. My concern is not so much security, as is the noise- the fan is constantly running and in complete silence at night it is pretty disturbing.
    I don't really mind waiting for it to power on when needed, but I would like it to be started automatically when someone tries to access it, instead of having to manually run a wake on LAN utility, but that sems to be rather complicated to set up.

    I guess so, I can sure the NAS doesn't have the function to control the fan in web GUI.
    And no command line to support fancontrol and monitor disk spinned down. 
    So it will be very complicated to stop the fan running while the disc into sleep mode..
