Many thanks for this - I hadn't considered the power supply, as I foolishly thought it either worked or it didn't. I switched it for another equivalent one and the NAS can see the disks now. Probably co-incidentally one is failing SMART so I'll replace it and restripe. Thanks again for your excellent suggestion!
