  • Just to wrap up this thread, my solution was a Mikrotik hAP AX2, which did the job I wanted. It's nominally a Wifi router, but a very capable and versatile one with many features. However, getting it to do any one thing therefore takes a lot of intricate configuration, and is full of pitfalls.

I can still find a use for the unit I bought as an AP so it won't be a total waste, but the alternatives from the Zyxel range you suggest are all 4G/5G/LTE routers which require a SIM fitted internally and separate access to a network. That's not what I'm looking for since my SIM…
