Someone tried this and said you have to change the directory to "firmware" with command "cd" . So good luck , anyway ;)

Maybe you can set the Router in bridge mode and then make the connection with a WLan Router behind . For replacing first look i you can login to the Router via SSH . With mobile devices there can be an issue with WLan "DTIM Interval" to not react , the value should not be to high "1 ms" is ok .

The ISP can configure the device via TR-069 i think you cannot block this . You can ask your ISP which ONT Modem is allowed to replace the Router , may you can buy it or your ISP sends you one . This device has to be registered by your ISP afterwards to be adressed .
