Replacing ISP firmware on AX7501

Hello community,

After my contract with the previous ISP ended I was allowed to keep the device since they switched the hardware they provide. I thought I'd be able to set it up as an extra access point but that option is locked in an extremely limited ISP custom firmware. That also means that I'm not able to use it with my current ISP since I can't change the connection settings.

Is there a way to flash a stock firmware without the option to do so in the web UI? Via some sort serial interface perhaps? It would be a shame to toss a working device I now own just because the functionality is locked…

Maybe you can set the Router in bridge mode and then make the connection with a WLan Router behind . For replacing first look i you can login to the Router via SSH .

Do you alrady got the newest FW ?

    Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately, I can't put it in the bridge mode, as the Broadband configuration is not available via the web UI, like most of the configuration options.

It's running V5.17(ABWW.4)C0, so definitely not the newest version.

I managed to ssh to the router, but from what I understand, the "admin" user is fairly limited

No, it's not available via the web UI. There is only backup/restore, but I suppose it's only for the settings that are editable.

So it seems youre locked out of this device . Is it possible to login via FTP access from a device in the local Network with cli of Windows or a Program ?

Only some freaks can make such an update via Hardware flashing …

Update. So I did a little searching on the forums and here's what I did so far.

    1. SSH to the device to disable modelcheck and fwidcheck via zycli

    2. Connect to the device via FTP

    3. Switched the mode to bin

    4. put the 5.17(ABPC.6)C0 firmware
(EDIT: When I try to upload the firmware you linked ,I am getting Invalid FW version, it looks like it's from a newer device.)

But nothing seems to have happened. I've seen the binary file present in the filesystem for a short while, but it looks like it's getting deleted after a minute or two

Yes this was meant like here :

Sometimes you need a version between the older and the newest Version .

Someone tried this and said you have to change the directory to "firmware" with command "cd" .

So good luck , anyway ;)

    Thank you!.

There is fw directory that accepts the binary file however, after uploading and file deletion, the LED just starts blinking red, which, I assume, means an error.

Could it be that this needs to be done over the wire and not wifi for some extra security?

Is there still an FTP server where one can find past firmware versions?

There is no Zycel ftp server anymore . Isn’t it normal during such a process that LED is blinking and you have to wait for some Minutes ? You could try a ftp Program instead .

You cold post the cli commands and reactions may be someone else can help you about .

If found this history of FW-s :

    https://www.cvedetails.com/version-list/859/112642/1/Zyxel-Ax7501-b0-Firmware.html

Is there a difference with the models EX7501 and AX7501 or AX7501-B1 and B0 ??

    https://spdl.zyxel.com/AX7501-B1/firmware(public_version)/AX7501-B1_5.17(ABPC.6)C0.pdf

5.17(ABPC.6)C0* seems to be the latest FW … the EX7501 firmware is not for this device …

PX7501-B0/AX7501-B0/AX7501-B1/PM7510-00 have identical FW , so search with these devices .

I found only an early FW for AX7501-B0 in this article download via dropbox maybe you can test : https://support.zyxel.eu/hc/en-us/articles/360019108619-Zyxel-security-advisory-for-DNSpooq
