Worked. I am on the device via SSH and root rights. Could I flash the original firmware onto the device from there? If yes how?

@Peter2 I'll test it with the browser tomorrow. A good idea. I currently have the 15.X. (See first post) 17.X is also available for download on the zyxel website. @tonygibbs16 Yes, I took the IMG file from the ZIP from the zyxel website.

Hey @Peter2 I loaded the firmware from the Zyxel homepage and also unpacked the ZIP archive (https://support.zyxel.eu/hc/en-us/articles/4403361365778-Zyxel-CPE-Devices-Firmware-Advanced-Downloads-Firmwares- and-other-resources). There are two files included. A PDF and an IMG. Unfortunately that doesn't work either.
