Question: Why wan1 must be enabled when using wan1_ppp?
Ans: Ethernet WAN interface is the base interface of wan_ppp, so ethernet wan must be enabled.
This concept also works with the VLAN interface, the base interface LAN should be enabled when using VLAN.
