After trying to set a static IP for the switch (System → IP Setup), save the configuration, and then reboot, the switch will stop functioning and force me to a factory reset.

This switch will only become non-functional after reboot. After setting the static IP, everything will still work as before. However, reboot will cause the switch to become non-responsive.

    Hi @jfoxwoosh,

Regarding the non-functional problem you encountered, I am wondering whether you successfully save the configuration before you reboot the device. It is highly possibly that if you fail to save the configuration before you reboot the device, then the device would turn to the factory default and that’s the reason why you fail to access the switch. Please navigate to Management > Maintenance > Save Configuration before you reboot it.

If the switch is still unreachable after you save the configuration and reboot it, then the problem may be the fact the your switch and other device share the same IP address. In order to check whether your switch obtain the same IP address with other device, please follow the two steps so that we can determine the exact management IP address assigned to your switch:

Step 1: Identify Switch IP Address

1.Download ZON Utility from this link:

Zyxel ZON Utility | Zyxel Devices Installation Tool | Zyxel Networks

2.Install and run the ZON Utility on your PC

3.Connect your PC to the same network as your Zyxel devices

4.The ZON Utility will automatically discover and display the IP addresses of all connected Zyxel devices

    Step 2: Network Connectivity Test

Once you have identified your switch's IP address (for example, 192.168.1.37):

1.Conduct Ping Test: Open Window’s Command Prompt and run:

    ping 192.168.1.37

Verify that the ping is successful

2.ARP Table Check: If ping succeeds, run:

    arp -a

This displays the ARP table with MAC addresses

    3. Verify MAC Address:

Compare the MAC address shown in the CMD output with the MAC address displayed in ZON Utility.

If MAC addresses don't match: This indicates an IP address conflict where multiple devices share the same IP

IP conflict exists, you'll need to assign a different IP address to your switch

Please update the forum with your results or if you encounter any additional problems. We're here to help!

    Thanks!

Alright, problem fixed. The switch is finally in static IP after reboot.

Here are the series of steps I did.

    1. In System → IP Setup, set the IP, subnet mask, and VID. Hit Apply.
    2. After hitting apply, I needed to clear the browser cache, and wait for a while to reconnect back into the switch's webUI using the static IP address set in step 1. The waiting to reconnect is crucial as it made me think I locked myself out since it will take a few minutes.
    3. After getting back into the switch's webUI, go back to System → IP Setup, and set the appropriate Default Gateway, save the configuration, and reboot. If the default gateway is not changed, it will default to 0.0.0.0. From my trial and error, rebooting with 0.0.0.0 default gateway will cause the switch to never come back online.
