XMG1915 - Configure ports to allow VLAN traffic. pfsense -> Switch -> AccessPoint
Thank you for taking time to help configure the switch. I am very new to switch usage.
I have several VLANS defined in my pfsense and was able to access them with an access point. I am unable to access the same after adding a switch between these two. Need some help to understand how to enable VLAN traffic.
VLANS defined in pfSense IoT (VLAN#20), Guets(VLAN#30), Office(VLAN#40)
PfSense is connected on Port1 of the switch
AccessPoint is connected on port8.

Hi @Sathish,

To enable VLAN traffic on your XMG1915 switch between your pfSense and Access Point, you need to configure both Port 1 (pfSense) and Port 8 (AP) as trunk ports. This allows them to carry traffic for multiple VLANs.
Here's how to set it up:
- Access the Switch's Web Interface: Log in to your XMG1915's web GUI.
- Create VLANs:
- Navigate to
SWITCHING > VLAN > VLAN Setup > Static VLAN. - Add VLANs 20, 30, and 40. Ensure each is active.
- Navigate to
- Configure VLAN Port Settings:
- Go to
SWITCHING > VLAN > VLAN Setup > VLAN Port Setup. - For Port 1 (pfSense connection):
- For VLANs 20, 30, and 40, set Port 1 as
Fixedand ensureTx Taggingis checked (tagged). - Set the PVID for Port 1 to 1.
- For VLANs 20, 30, and 40, set Port 1 as
- For Port 8 (AP connection):
- For VLANs 20, 30, and 40, set Port 8 as
Fixedand ensureTx Taggingis checked (tagged). - Set the PVID for Port 8 to 1.
- For VLANs 20, 30, and 40, set Port 8 as
- Go to
This configuration will allow your switch to correctly pass the tagged VLAN traffic from pfSense to your AP and vice-versa. The AP will then handle tagging traffic from its SSIDs with the appropriate VLAN IDs.
