Question:

Why does closing the captive portal's "grant access" page or tab terminate internet access, particularly affecting browsers like Microsoft Edge?

Answer:

This issue arises from a default device setting that interprets the closing of the captive portal's grant access browser tab as a user logout event, leading to session termination and loss of internet connectivity. Although initially noted with Microsoft Edge, this behavior is a system-wide setting.

  • Root Cause: The default configuration for user sessions on the device includes an automatic logout mechanism tied to the closing of the captive portal's confirmation window.
  • Resolution: To ensure internet access persists even after the "grant access" tab is closed, you must disable the automatic browser-close logout feature via the device's Command Line Interface (CLI).
    • Connect to your device via CLI.
    • Execute the following commands:
      • Router(config)# no users browser-close-with-logout
      • Router(config)# write
    • You can confirm the setting has been applied by running Router(config)# show users browser-close-with-logout. The output should display "Users browser close with logout: no".
