Zyxel WiFi Showing Strong Signal but Experiencing Random Connection Drops

I have a Zyxel access point set up at home and while the signal strength looks good, I still experience random drops in connection, especially when multiple devices are connected at the same time. Streaming and video calls are the most affected. I have already tried changing channels and updating firmware, but the issue still comes and goes. Has anyone faced a similar problem or found a reliable setting or solution that improved overall WiFi performance.

    Hi apklub,

This issue could be caused by several factors. Even if your laptop shows a strong signal, the access point (AP) might not be able to receive your laptop’s signal properly, as laptops usually transmit at a lower power level.

How far are you from the AP? Are there any brick walls or other obstacles in between?

It’s also worth checking whether there’s any pattern to the disconnects, such as microwave usage during the issue happens. Interference from neighboring networks or other wireless devices in the area can cause this behavior. If possible, try using the 5 GHz band, as it is typically less congested than 2.4 GHz.

    Go through this guide here.

A strong signal doesn’t always mean a stable connection. In many cases with Zyxel routers, the drops come from interference or channel congestion rather than signal strength itself. If your router is sitting on a crowded 2.4 GHz channel (which happens a lot in apartments or dense neighborhoods), devices can show full bars but still lose packets constantly. It’s worth manually setting the channel instead of leaving it on auto, and if your devices support it, forcing them onto the 5 GHz band often stabilizes things because it’s usually less congested.

Another angle people sometimes overlook is firmware and device handoff behavior. Older firmware on Zyxel units can cause periodic reconnects when the router renegotiates DHCP leases or band steering decisions. Updating the firmware, slightly increasing the DHCP lease time, and disabling aggressive band-steering (if enabled) can sometimes stop those “random” drops. Also check if the issue appears on all devices or just one—because if it’s only a phone or laptop, the problem may actually be its Wi-Fi adapter power-saving settings rather than the router itself.
