NWA50AX no mobile voice calls

As per title.

Motorola G9 play indicates it is configured for wifi calls, but none work. Data works fine, text and webpages etc.

Router is a Draytek 160 configured as a router, connected to the DSL phone line.

Swapping the above for a Zyxel 1312B gives voice calls on the mobile.

AP is as above, no subscriptions taken.

Seaching suggests an SSID is required?

Any suggestions why?

    Hi @jackg,

It sounds like you're encountering an interesting challenge with Wi-Fi calling on your Motorola G9 Play when using the NWA50AX. The fact that swapping your Draytek 160 for a Zyxel 1312B resolves the voice call issue points towards a potential configuration difference between the two router setups rather than a fundamental problem with the NWA50AX itself for general data.

Here are some initial steps and considerations to troubleshoot this:

    • Router Firewall and Port Forwarding: Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi) requires specific UDP ports to be open for its operation. Please ensure that UDP 500 and UDP 4500 are allowed through your Draytek 160 router's firewall. If you are using an iPhone, UDP ports 16384-49327 for RTP should also be allowed. While Zyxel APs are designed to transparently forward VoWiFi traffic, an upstream router can filter or restrict this data.
    • SIP ALG: Some routers have a feature called SIP ALG (Application Layer Gateway) that can interfere with Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic, which Wi-Fi calling relies on. Try disabling SIP ALG on your Draytek 160 if it's enabled.
    • NWA50AX SSID Configuration: Your searching suggests an SSID is required, which is correct for any wireless connection. Ensure your NWA50AX is broadcasting an SSID and that your Motorola G9 Play is connected to it. If you have multiple SSIDs or are trying to extend an existing WLAN, ensure the SSID name, security method, and password are consistent for seamless connectivity.
    • 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz: While data works fine, some devices might behave differently on various bands. You could try configuring a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID on your NWA50AX for testing, as 2.4 GHz generally offers better penetration and range, which might be a factor.
    • Firmware Version: Ensure your NWA50AX is running on the latest firmware version. Outdated firmware can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior.

To help us investigate further, please provide the following information:

    • Network Topology Map: A simple diagram showing how your Draytek 160, NWA50AX, and Motorola G9 Play are connected.
    • NWA50AX Firmware Version: You can find this by logging into the NWA50AX's web GUI (usually at 1.1.1.1 or its assigned IP address if in standalone mode) or via the Nebula Control Center if managed by Nebula.
    • Draytek 160 Configuration: Screenshots of your Draytek 160's firewall rules, NAT settings, and any SIP ALG configurations.
    • Nebula Information (if applicable): If your NWA50AX is managed by Nebula, please enable Zyxel Support Access via Help > Support Request in the Nebula console. Also, provide your Organization and Site name. This allows the Zyxel support team to view your cloud environment configuration directly, significantly shortening troubleshooting time.

    Hi @jackg

This issue is mainly on the firewall's setting. The SSID setting is to enhance the call quality, not fix calling problem.

Please ensure UDP 500, and UDP 4500 for Wi-Fi calling/VoWiFi is allowed on your firewall first.

@Zyxel_Melen in which direction these two UDP ports should be enabled?

Also… they seems familiar to me: these seems to be IPSec / NatT ports.

    Hi @mMontana

These UDP ports should be enabled on both directions. And yes, these ports are IPSec/NAT ports since VoWiFi uses the IPSec tunnel to secure the phone call.
