Brand new XGS1250-12. Seems it may be dropping 10G port randomly

The switch is on a shelf so plenty of circulating air and ambient is ~70 fahrenheit.

So far I've had it for about 3 days and had 3 drops. It's connected to my router (running opnsense with a Chelsio T540-BT) which had been working fine by itself as a software switch for months. I see the NIC card that connects from OpnSense←→switch 10G port go offline when this happens, the led on the card itself goes red. The addition of the XGS is the only change to this set up. Thanks.

This would be Ethernet port not SFP+ ?

Have you got the newest firmware?

Maybe your setup before was fine due to transmission voltage working well with the cable you have but XGS1250-12 has a lower transmission voltage that your cable is no good now?

Look to get a CAT6 or CAT6a that are Shielded like

Yes this is the regular RJ45 10GBE Port that is being used.

The switch came with the latest firmware as far as I can tell.

I am expecting to receive an Intel X520-DA2 card soon and a DAC cable as well so I am going to test that set up as well. My cables are these:

p.s. AI said to set the port on the NIC to 10G full duplex instead of 'auto' because if the switch has any drops the NIC won't try to renegotiate. So far it has been good.

    Hi @undecided65,

As you mentioned that you configured the NIC to 10G Full Duplex and “so far it has been good,” may I confirm whether the random 10G port drops are no longer occurring?

If the issue still happens, could you please help provide the following information so we can further check:

    • The NIC driver version
    • The result of a cross-test (using the Intel X520-DA2 card and DAC cable you will be receiving)

This will help us narrow down whether the issue is related to the driver, cable, compatibility, or hardware.

@Zyxel_Tina , thanks. Yes, it's been almost 4 5 6 days and no hick ups yet (I mean, since the Chelsio T540-BT is now configured to be at 10G all the time). I have not received the other card yet. Is there any place on the switch where we could see if it dropped a port connection? Does it keep any kind of short term log? I can see port disconnects in my OpnSense logs so yeah last time the port was dropped 2/21/2026.

    p.s. The card reports this

    dev.t5nex.0.firmware_version: 1.27.5.0
    dev.t5nex.0.bs_version: 1.1.0.0
    dev.t5nex.0.tp_version: 0.1.4.9

    And it's running in opnsense

    FreeBSD OPNsense.internal 14.3-RELEASE-p7 FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE-p7 stable/25.7-n271813-98ad27755186 SMP amd64

Which is FreeBSD 14.3 (whatever drivers that has natively).

    Hi @undecided65,

Thank you for the detailed update.

Regarding your question about logs: since the XGS1250-12 is a web-managed switch, it does not support logging capabilities for end users to review.

As the connection is now stable after setting the NIC to 10G Full Duplex (but was dropping when set to Auto), it appears to be a compatibility issue.

Finally, if possible, could you share the results once you complete testing with the Intel X520-DA2 card and DAC cable? This will help us better understand and confirm if it's hardware-specific.

    We appreciate your cooperation!

Well, it dropped the connection again today…I even swapped the cables to the different 10G ports but it would not come on. The other 10G devices with different cards are not having issues but this card also did not have issues before the switch was introduced so this points to some type of incompatibility.

    Hi @undecided65,

    Sorry for the late reply!

To assist with reproducing the issue you're encountering, could you confirm if the Chelsio T540-BT network adapter you mentioned refers to the "Dell Chelsio T540-BT 4-Ports 10GBe-T RJ-45 PCIe HP Ethernet Adapter Card 2RGPF"?

If possible, please provide the full and exact model details— a photo of the product label would be ideal.

    Thank you for your help!
