How to Optimize and Troubleshoot Wi-Fi Slow Speeds?
Zyxel Employee
If wireless clients experience slow Wi-Fi speeds, the issue may be related to signal quality, band congestion, channel settings, physical obstacles, or the AP uplink connection. Please check the following items.
1. Test with a 5 GHz / 6 GHz SSID
Create a dedicated test SSID using only the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands.
This helps isolate the impact of congestion and interference commonly seen on the 2.4 GHz band.
2. Check the client signal quality
Move the client device closer to the access point and test the performance again.
A stronger signal and clearer line of sight between the client and AP can help improve wireless throughput and reduce packet retransmissions.
3. Check for physical obstacles
Check whether there are physical barriers, such as walls, metal cabinets, shelves, or other obstacles, between the AP and the client device.
If the signal is weakened by the installation location, consider adjusting the AP placement or adding another AP to improve coverage.
4. Adjust the 5 GHz channel width
If the client has a lower signal level or the wireless environment is congested, consider reducing the 5 GHz channel width from 80 MHz to 40 MHz.
A narrower channel width may help improve connection stability and reduce the impact of interference, although the maximum throughput may be lower.
5. Verify the AP uplink speed
Check whether the AP uplink is negotiated at 1 Gbps or higher.
If the Ethernet link is limited to 10/100 Mbps, replace the Ethernet cable with a certified cable and inspect the RJ45 connector, switch port, and gateway port. After replacing the cable or changing the port, verify whether the AP uplink can negotiate at the expected speed.
