    Answer is "simple": IEEE 802.3af compliance.
    Moreover, 44V is minimum available if necessary at the switch port, 57V is the maximum at the port, 350mA as top current. At the endpoint, minimum is 37V, same maximum.
    Long story short, if your current is not "that" high and the voltage is not triple or quadruple, the user device will take advantage of the higher voltage for lower the current drain. DC-powered HiFi amplifier can take advantage of +12/25% more voltage or 50-100% more current, with a switching power adapter, gaining better drive management for the speakers (more controlled basses). Some even more, but refer to the specs of the amplifier producer.
    Moreover, Ubiquiti declares compliance with 802.3af. If the AP get fried... IMVHO the AP producer should be questioned for reasons why happened.
