gs1920 ipv6 switch does not provide hostname to dhcp server

Hi,

I have setup ipv6 in my network.

All zyxel switches do not provide an hostname to the dhcp-server for IPV6.

For IPV4 they do!

Is there any setup, e.g. via dhcp-options, to make the switch transmit the hostname to the dhcp-server?

    Hi @Kallewirsch,

May I know if your DHCP server is built on a Windows server?
I can reproduce it on my LAB, but it is interesting that no matter whether my PC or the GS1920 will not add hostname information in the DHCPv6 packets.

  • My DHCP-Server is Linux, Ubuntu Bind9 (or Named).

All my Ubuntu Systems I have running provide the hostname as well as Windows 11 Clients.

    Hi @Kallewirsch,

    Thanks for your detailed information.

First, we need to know the difference between DHCPv4 and DHCPv6. The hostname in DHCPv4 option 12 can populate the DNS A record, and the hostname in DHCPv6 option 39 can populate the DNS AAAA record. If the network device supports DHCPv4 option 12 and DHCPv6 option 39, its hostname will be listed in the server list.
After investigation, I found that our switch does not support DHCPv6 option 39 currently. That's why you cannot see the switch hostname on the DHCPv6 server but the DHCPv4 server.

  • mmh - you might imagine I will ask why a zyxel device does not support Option 39, since this is a widly used option.

Please place a feature request. Although this shouldn't been necessary, since Option 39 is more or less a must!

    Merry Christmas
