Can I connect two Zyxel XMG1915 switches to get more ports?

Hi all,

from my requirements, XMG1915-18EP would be my perfect switch to buy. However, the fan is quite a problem, as I will have the switch near my desk and I am sensitive to that fan noise. I have read posts that the fan can get noisy.

Thus, I thought that I will get XMG1915-10EP and the XMG1915-10E which are both fanless. and give me the same ports.

My question is: can I use the uplink port to daisy-chain those switches using, for instance, the DAC10G-1M-ZZ0103F 1m sfp+ cable? I have searched the documentation but the closest thing I found was stacking (failover setup), but that's a different story and stacking is not available in those models?

Will it be possible to have a logical large switch, e.g. to have ports from two switches in the same subnet?

Thanks!

    Hi @The_Riddler_1982,

Of course, you can use the DAC cable to link those switches with a daisy chain and get more ports. And these switches will also be in the same subnet/LAN. But the switch settings are independent. So, you need to set two switches separately.

Thanks for your reply. That's good news. Some more questions:

    • 1 DAC cable is enough or should I use 2 for link aggregation?
    • What is the official name for that feature? I have searched the documentation and daisy-chain was not mentioned at all.
    • Is there any rack mount kit compatible for 10 inch for those switches? Something like that, but the xmg1915 series is not listed: https://letmerepair-direct.co.uk/products/zyxel-original-rack-mount-kit-4-4sc-with-8x-screws-black

    Thanks again!

    Hi @The_Riddler_1982,

1 DAC cable is enough or should I use 2 for link aggregation?

This depends on your usage. However, you need to evaluate what port you will connect the XMG1915 to your uplink device.

What is the official name for that feature? I have searched the documentation and daisy-chain was not mentioned at all.

Connecting two switches is a normal topology/connection. This is not a feature or function.

Let me check for this and update you later.

    Hi @The_Riddler_1982,

The XMG1915-10E/EP is a desktop model, which doesn't support the rack mount kit. Or are you going to purchase XMG1915-18EP?

The XMG1915-10E and XMG1915-10EP are 250mm so even if you get a 10 inch rack shelf it will not fit

What about 19 inch rack? I have both 10" and 19" wall racks available. I could put it on a floor plate instead but I was looking for a more stable setup. I don't want to get the XMG1915-18EP because it would be placed very near to my desktop and several reviews have shown that the fan is not silent but noisy. I do not want to switch the fan with a Noctua to avoid warranty loss at all. Though, I do really like the XMG1915-18EP.

Sure two 19 inch rack shelfs would work

Because of the fan I want to stick to the desktop models. I have seen 19" inch rack kits as well:

I will keep it on a floor.

    Hi @The_Riddler_1982,

You may take a look at the product photos first; the link is below:

There are no screw holes on the side of XMG1915-10E/EP for screwing the rack mount.
