Enhancing Network Reliability: Introducing Hardware Alerts in Zyxel Cloud-Managed Switches

At Zyxel Networks, we understand the critical importance of maintaining a robust and reliable network infrastructure. Our commitment to ensuring the optimal performance and security of your networking devices has led us to develop an advanced hardware alert system. This innovative feature is designed to proactively notify users of potential issues, enabling swift actions to safeguard the network's integrity.

Real-time Alerts on Your Switch List

The cornerstone of our hardware alert system is the real-time status notification integrated into the switch list interface. Users can easily monitor the health of their switches through a clear and intuitive status icon. This icon turns orange to indicate various conditions that require attention, enhancing the manageability of your network devices.

Conditions Triggering Orange Alerts:

  • Misconfiguration of management IP or VLAN
  • Activation of IGMP with network analytic alerts detecting network abnormalities
  • Abnormal fan status or temperature readings

In the latest 17.30 firmware update, we have introduced alerts specifically for fan abnormalities and unusual temperature readings. These alerts are crucial for preempting hardware failures and ensuring that your network remains operational.

Understanding Alert Conditions

While fan speed adjustments and temperature fluctuations are common in network devices, not all scenarios will trigger an alert. We aim to balance alert sensitivity with practicality, focusing on genuinely critical conditions. It's important to note that fan speed increases, without other symptoms of distress, currently do not trigger alerts. Discussions are ongoing to refine our approach to CPU, memory usage, and power supply unit (PSU) alerts, aiming to provide comprehensive coverage without overwhelming users with notifications.

How to Access and Interpret Alerts

Users can learn more about the specific nature of an alert by simply hovering over the status icon. This action will display a tooltip with details about the condition, such as fan failures or temperature anomalies. This feature ensures that users are not just alerted to potential issues but are also provided with immediate context to understand the situation better.

Email Notifications: Extending Alert Reach

Beyond on-dashboard notifications, our system also supports email alerts. This feature allows users to set a time delay in minutes for receiving email notifications after a hardware abnormality is detected. Email alerts are currently focused on fan and temperature conditions, providing users with detailed information about the issue, including the site name, device name, MAC address, and specifics about the affected fan unit.

This proactive alert system is part of Zyxel Networks' ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability, security, and manageability of network infrastructures. By staying informed about the health of your networking devices, you can take timely measures to address issues, minimizing downtime and maintaining optimal network performance.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to refine and expand our hardware alert capabilities, ensuring that your network remains strong, secure, and smart.
