XGS4600 52f/ 32f possible memory utilization bug.

Lately we have experienced a slow increase in device memory utilization, cause currently unknown.

Of more immediate concern here is that when utilization reaches 46~48% usage, the device management plane completely locks up with only a reboot restoring it.

As for the cause, we are currently exploring:

Stacking, but none stacked devices experience the usage increase.

Login and access control, but artificially ramped up login and logout requests does not result in increased usage.

Firmware version, but older firmware also experienced increasing usage.

Device uptime, but no correlation identified across 2 dozen devices.

OSPF, but process was live unchanged for 3 years prior to usage increase.

Interface counters, but clearing counters does not decrease memory usage.

Disabling and enabling remote access services had no effect.

    HI @Jbrown ,

The firmware for the XGS4600 is quite dated (released on 2022/11/14), and since then, we've implemented bug fixes and enhancements. We can provide you with the latest date code firmware version to check if it resolves your issue.

Please let us know if you'd like to use the updated firmware, and we can send it to you via private message.

OK thank you, it did not resolve our issue as it turns out.

We have narrowed onto an apparent cause however. Opening and closing an SSH session every 3-4 seconds resulted in memory utilization rapidly surpassing 50% and the device completely locking up within 14 hours. This emulates a trend we are seeing across production devices over an average span of 6 months.

So it appears session control is at the heart of our issue.

    Hi @Jbrown ,

Do you have any vulnerability scan in your network? Or any reason let you narrow the issue and end up by login and logout by SSH?

It sounds like memory leakage, if it's possible, we would like to collect two tech support files:

    • The tech support file should be collected before the CPU memory hits 50% (Check memory in interlog)
    • The tech support file should be collected after switch reboot (Switch with low memory usage)
