In the latest firmware update, Zyxel has introduced a more flexible log rotation feature for USB storage, providing better log file management and reducing storage overflow risk. This update addresses the need to maintain up-to-date logs efficiently on external USB storage devices without creating excessively large files that are difficult to manage or analyze.

Key Features of USB Storage Log Rotation

  1. Rotation by File Size
    • Previously, logs on USB storage could only rotate daily. The new update allows logs to be rotated based on file size, making it easier to manage and view log files.
    • You can set a maximum log file size (e.g., 10 MB). When this limit is reached, the system will archive the current log and begin a new file.
    • The system checks at regular intervals to see if the active log file exceeds the set limit, ensuring timely rotation.
  2. Rotate File Naming
    • Each log file saved on the USB storage device is timestamped and named sequentially to facilitate organization and retrieval.
    • When a log file reaches the specified size, it is copied to a new file (e.g., log1.log, log2.log), and the latest logs continue to be saved in the primary log file until the next rotation.
  3. Improved Log Management for High-Traffic Environments
    • For networks with high traffic, the previous single large log file format could become difficult. With this new feature, logs are divided into smaller files, allowing for faster access and easier filtering.
    • This is especially useful for troubleshooting as it avoids the delays associated with loading and scanning through a single, oversized log file.

Benefits of the New Log Rotation Option

  • Enhanced Performance: Smaller, segmented log files reduce load times when accessing or analyzing logs.
  • Improved Usability: Logs are easier to manage and monitor, especially in high-traffic networks.
  • Customization: Users have control over log rotation parameters, which can be tailored to the specific needs of their network environment.

Summary

The updated USB storage log rotation feature offers improved log management, particularly for networks with high data flow, ensuring more efficient troubleshooting and data retrieval.
