In Nebula 18.30, Zyxel introduced the CX4800 Series, including the powerful CX8040 switch. These high-performance switches are built without a physical reset button, raising the question: How can users reset the device to factory defaults if the admin password is lost?

With the latest update, Zyxel has provided a new solution to address this.

The Challenge: No Reset Button

Unlike many other switch models, the CX4800 Series does not include a hardware reset button on the device. This posed a challenge for administrators needing to reset the device due to forgotten passwords

New Solution: Factory Reset via Debug Mode

Starting with this update, users can now reset the CX4800 switch to factory default through the console interface by entering debug mode. This greatly simplifies the recovery process.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Power on the CX8040 switch.
  2. Connect to the console port using a TeraTerm or PuTTY.
  3. During boot-up, press any key when prompted to enter debug mode.
  4. In debug mode, use the following command: CX4800-56F> atrfThis command will immediately restore the switch to factory default settings.
  5. If you forget the command, use: CX4800-56F> athe This shows a list of available debug commands, including the factory reset option.

Summary

The updated CX4800 lost password recovery process offers a faster, simpler alternative to recovery.
