Hi I am interested in the XMG-108 switch and am trying to identify if it uses Energy Efficient Ethernet or not as I need it to not be in use.

In the pdf for the switch here https://download.zyxel.com/XMG-108/datasheet/XMG-108_3.pdf it says:

IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient
Ethernet (deactivated by default)

Does this mean it's not in use at all? And presumably as it is unmanaged there is no way to enable it or what is the control for it? If it is unusable why would it list it as supported but deactivated in the doc or is that erroneous?

Hopefully it is disabled or at least controllable if so I will buy it.

    Hi @superhands,

The Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) in XMG-108 is by default deactivated, which means that this device meets your requirement.

“deactivated by default” means that the EEE feature is deactivated when you first use this device. That is to say, the EEE feature is not running to affect your network traffic once you turn on the device.

Since XMG-108 is an unmanaged switch, there is no interface for the user to log in and modify the configuration. Hence, the EEE feature is permanently deactivated in XMG-108.

The reason why we write down "IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (deactivated by default)" in the XMG-108 datasheet is to rule out EEE as the cause of network issues. If users experience network issues such as slow link speeds, port flapping (ports going up/down unexpectedly), or network latency problems, these issues are not triggered by EEE.

In sum, you can safely purchase XMG-108. The EEE feature would be permanently deactivated and would not influence your network traffic.

    Sincerely,

    Lynn

Great thanks for the confirmation, sounds like this should be perfect for my requirements. As I don't need a full managed switch but EEE causes so many problems an unmanaged one without that is perfect.
