If your wireless clients occasionally obtain IP addresses from an unexpected DHCP range, this behavior is often caused by the presence of an unintended or unauthorized DHCP server within the network. Since an access point operates as a Layer-2 bridge, it forwards DHCP discovery broadcasts without modifying or filtering them. As a result, client devices may receive DHCP offers from a different active DHCP server on the network.

Steps to Resolve

  1. Inspect the Network for Unauthorized DHCP Servers
Check switches, routers, servers, and any connected devices for DHCP services that may be running unexpectedly or misconfigured. Remove or disable any DHCP server distributing addresses from the incorrect range.
  2. Ensure Only One Valid DHCP Source Exists
Confirm that the intended DHCP server is the only active one on the network segment.
  3. Verify Access Point and VLAN Configuration
Review your AP and wired network configuration to ensure traffic is segmented correctly and consistent with your network design.
