Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) is a cloud-based system required for outdoor 6GHz wireless deployments in the United States and Canada to prevent interference with existing services such as radar systems.
Zyxel access points communicate with authorized AFC providers, such as Qualcomm, to determine which 6GHz channels are permitted at their specific installation location. The AP automatically detects its GPS location and altitude using built-in hardware, sends this information to the AFC server, and then receives a list of approved frequencies it is allowed to operate on.
To remain compliant with FCC regulations, if the AP loses communication with the AFC service, it must immediately stop transmitting on the 6GHz band.
