WISP: On-site Deployment and Installation Best Practices
Zyxel Employee
Proper physical installation is important for achieving the best performance in long-range WISP deployments. For long-distance coverage between 7 to 10 kilometers, Zyxel recommends installing the Root AP at least 40 meters above ground level to ensure sufficient signal coverage. For shorter distances below 3 kilometers, the installation height can typically be lower than 20 meters. To reduce signal reflection and interference, devices should also be installed at least 6 meters above reflective surfaces such as water or metal structures.
To simplify on-site deployment, Zyxel provides an Installer Mode that can be accessed through a mobile phone. By enabling a local SSID on the AP, technicians can connect directly to the device using a phone and access a local management interface without carrying a laptop up the tower. Through this interface, installers can verify AFC connection status, configure GPS and altitude settings, and run built-in speed tests using the iperf protocol between Root and Leaf units to confirm link quality before completing the installation.
