Which antennas are suitable for FWA515 to boost the network signal and Wi-Fi?

Options

To optimize the signal on your Zyxel Nebula FWA515, it is important to understand that the external antenna ports are strictly designed to boost the cellular (5G/4G LTE) network signal, not the Wi-Fi signal.

1. Boosting the Network Signal (5G / 4G LTE)

The Nebula FWA515 is equipped with two TS9 external antenna connectors on the back panel, along with an Int/Ext (Internal/External) switch.

Recommended Antenna Specifications:

  • Antenna Type: An outdoor directional antenna is highly recommended (especially if you are far from the mobile base station).
  • MIMO Support: Choose an antenna that supports MIMO 2×2 (which will have two cables) or use two separate antennas. Using both TS9 ports to enable MIMO is strongly recommended for the best real-world download/upload speeds and stability.
  • Frequency Bands: Ensure the antenna is compatible with the specific 5G NR and 4G LTE frequency bands used by your mobile carrier.
  • Antenna Gain: A gain of 7 to 11 dBi is recommended. (Avoid excessively high-gain antennas, as they have very narrow beamwidths and can cause connection instability if misaligned).

Connector & Installation Requirements:

  • Adapters Needed (SMA to TS9): Most high-quality outdoor mobile antennas on the market terminate in SMA Female connectors. Because the FWA515 uses TS9 ports, you must use SMA Female → TS9 pigtail adapter cables (~15 cm) to bridge the connection.
  • Cabling: Keep the coaxial cable run from the outdoor antenna to your router as short as possible to prevent signal loss.
  • Hardware Switch: Once the antennas are securely connected, you must toggle the Int/Ext physical switch on the back of the FWA515 to EXT(If this switch is left on INT, the router will ignore the external antenna; conversely, if set to EXT without antennas connected, it will lose cellular signal completely).

2. Boosting the Wi-Fi Signal

The FWA515 does not support external Wi-Fi antennas. Its state-of-the-art Wi-Fi 7 (BE7200) network is powered entirely by high-performance internal 4x4 + 4x4 dual-band concurrent antennas.

To improve and boost your Wi-Fi coverage:

  • Optimal Router Placement: Place the FWA515 in a central, elevated location in your home or office. Keep it away from concrete or brick walls, metal surfaces, mirrors, and large household electronics (like microwaves) which degrade Wi-Fi waves.
  • Wired Expansion: If you have large coverage gaps or multiple floors, the best way to extend the Wi-Fi network is to connect a dedicated Zyxel Wi-Fi Access Point to one of the high-speed 2.5 GbE LAN ports on the back of the FWA515.
