Legacy devices, specifically those referred to as IoT devices, may experience connectivity and DHCP acquisition problems when connected to newer access points, despite functioning correctly with older AP models under identical network configurations.

To address compatibility issues and improve connectivity for legacy devices on Zyxel Access Points, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Adjust 2.4GHz Radio Mode: Set the 2.4GHz Radio mode to 802.11b/g. This can typically be configured via Configure > Access points > Radio settings > 2.4GHz in the Nebula control panel (then select the specific AP).
  • Disable AMPDU and AMSDU: Disable AMPDU and AMSDU features, which can sometimes interfere with older clients. This is usually done via CLI.
  • Optimize Dynamic Channel Selection (DCS):

    • Adjust DCS settings to allow for a broader range of 2.4GHz channels to alleviate potential congestion.
    • Disable the DCS client aware feature to allow the AP more flexibility in changing channels.
  • Enable Band Select: For networks with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz clients, enable "Band Select" across SSIDs. This encourages dual-band clients to connect to the less congested 5GHz band, preserving the 2.4GHz band for devices that genuinely require it (like some legacy devices).

  • Enable U-APSD: Enable U-APSD (Unscheduled Automatic Power Save Delivery) on the SSID specifically used by the devices on the new APs.
  • Investigate DHCP Server: Thoroughly check DHCP server logs and network configurations to identify any issues preventing legacy devices from successfully acquiring IP addresses.
  • Conduct Comparative Analysis (Advanced): For a deeper understanding, collect detailed logs, diagnostic information, wireless packet captures, and DHCP packets mirrored on the AP's uplink. This data should be gathered while devices are connected to both an older, working AP model and the new Zyxel APs under identical configurations, including the same channels, to compare their interaction behaviors.
