Optimizing 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Printer connections with Access Points
Zyxel Employee
This article addresses common Wi-Fi printing issues experienced with older 802.11b/g/n printers when connected to access points, leading to slow performance, high latency, or disconnections. It provides recommended configurations to enhance compatibility and performance for these legacy devices.
Why this causes compatibility issues
Older Wi-Fi printers, particularly those using 802.11b/g/n standards, may struggle with the default configurations or advanced features of newer access points. Symptoms include ping latencies high, Wi-Fi speeds low, and AP logs indicating client disconnections at low signal strengths. This can be due to legacy devices not handling modern roaming protocols or stricter signal requirements effectively, and potentially higher encryption methods or advanced optimizations designed for newer clients.
To improve compatibility and performance for legacy Wi-Fi printers, apply the following configuration adjustments and best practices on you access points:
- Dedicated SSID for Legacy Printers: Create a specific SSID designated solely for older printers, configured exclusively for the 2.4 GHz band.
Optimize 2.4 GHz Settings:
- Set the 2.4 GHz channel width to 20 MHz.
- Set the minimum data rate to 1 Mbps to minimize compatible issue.
Disable Advanced Features: Disable features that may interfere with older devices or their roaming capabilities:
- Load Balancing
- Smart Steering
- 802.11r (Fast Roaming) on the printer SSID, as some legacy printers may not handle it correctly.
Enable U-APSD: If printers experience high initial latency, especially when waking from sleep mode, enable U-APSD (Unscheduled Automatic Power Save Delivery) for the printer SSID.
- Ensure the Wi-Fi signal strength for clients is ideally higher than -65 dBm wherever they operate.
