Beginning with sustained multicast ingress, Zyxel access points default with Multicast-to-Unicast (M2U) enabled on SSIDs.
In wireless networking, M2U is an optimization feature used by Zyxel Access Points, allowing them to transmit at maximum rate instead of a slow, fixed fallback speed.
When M2U is active, the AP translates every incoming multicast frame into individual unicast frames for every associated client.
However, this can lead to extreme airtime utilization, packet queue saturation, and temporary performance loss if the multicast storm happens in the environment.

Recommended Solutions and Best Practices

To resolve and prevent wireless performance degradation caused by multicast storms, implement the following network optimizations:

  • Enable IGMP Snooping (Advanced IGMP): This is critical. Without IGMP Snooping, multicast is treated as broadcast and forwarded to all ports, which is the root cause of network storms.
  • VLAN Segmentation: Segregate traffic for Guest, IPTV, CCTV, and Management into separate VLANs to isolate broadcast/multicast domains.
  • Configure Switch STP / Loop Guard / Storm Control: Turn off RSTP on AP-facing edge ports. Enable Loop Guard and Storm Control on edge switches to protect the network core from loops and excessive traffic.
  • Recommended Storm Control Thresholds: For edge ports connecting to APs on switches and AP itself if model supports.
    • Broadcast Storm Control: 100 pps (packet-per-second)
    • Multicast Storm Control: 100 pps. If legitimate active IPTV streams are present on guest VLANs, adjust accordingly. Otherwise, limit to 100 pps for SSIDs.
