When an Access Point (AP) is unable to obtain a management IP address via DHCP from the router/gateway below are the recommended troubleshooting steps:

By default, Zyxel APs are configured to obtain an IP address automatically from a DHCP server. If it fails to do so, it will typically fall back to its default IP address: 192.168.1.2.

  1. Verify Physical Connectivity & LED Status:
    • Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the AP's uplink port and the switch/router.
    • Check the AP's LED status. (e.g., Is it blinking orange/green? A slow orange/green blink on modern Zyxel APs indicates the AP is powered on but cannot reach the internet or Nebula Cloud, often due to a lack of an IP address).
  2. Scan with the Zyxel ZON Utility:
    • Download and run the Zyxel One Network (ZON) Utility on a computer connected to the same network/switch.
    • The ZON utility can discover the AP even if it has failed to get a DHCP IP or has fallen back to 192.168.1.2 or 0.0.0.0. If it shows 0.0.0.0 or an incorrect subnet, you can use ZON to temporarily assign a static IP to log into its local web GUI.
  3. Check Management VLAN Settings:
    • If your network utilizes VLANs, ensure the switch port connecting to the AP is configured with the correct Native VLAN (PVID). By default, the AP will send DHCP requests untagged (VLAN 1). If the DHCP server is on a tagged VLAN, the switch port must be configured accordingly.
  4. Isolate the AP:
    • Temporarily connect the AP directly to your main DHCP router (bypassing any managed switches or intermediate hardware) using a known-working Ethernet cable to see if it successfully grabs an IP.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you might consider contacting Zyxel support for further assistance.

To help us narrow down the issue, please share the following information with Zyxel Support:

  1. The product model of your Zyxel AP (e.g., NWA50AX, WAX610D)?
  2. Your network topology: How is the AP physically connected (e.g., AP -> PoE Switch -> Gateway)? Are there VLANs configured?
  3. Management Mode: Is this AP managed locally (Standalone) or via the Nebula Cloud Control Center?
