IoT devices often support fewer Wi-Fi features than laptops and smartphones. Some devices may experience onboarding failures, intermittent disconnections, or difficulty reconnecting when advanced security, sign-in, roaming, or band-steering features are enabled.

The IoT compatibility action applies a recommended set of settings to help reduce these common connectivity issues.

Create a Dedicated IoT SSID

We recommend creating a dedicated SSID for IoT devices before applying the IoT-compatible settings. This prevents the compatibility changes from affecting laptops, smartphones, and other wireless clients.

The following configuration is recommended when creating a new IoT SSID:

Setting

Recommendation

SSID usage

Dedicated to IoT devices

WLAN security

WPA2-Personal

Password

Use a strong, unique password

Network access

Allow access only to required services and resources

Important Considerations

Item

Description

Deployment timing

The optimized settings take effect only after you click Save.

Device reconnection

Connected devices may temporarily disconnect and may need to reconnect after deployment.

Multiple pending changes

Other pending configuration changes may be deployed together when you click Save.

Compatibility

The optimization reduces common connectivity issues but cannot guarantee compatibility with every IoT device or vendor.

Existing clients

Devices may fail to reconnect if the WLAN security mode or password requirements change.

Configuration flexibility

The optimized settings are not locked and can be modified later.

Shared SSIDs

If non-IoT clients also use the SSID, review the affected settings carefully before saving.
