Yes, you can absolutely change the antennas on the Zyxel NWA55AXE. The device is designed with external, detachable antennas specifically to allow users to attach different antennas to better suit various deployment requirements (such as long-distance point-to-point wireless bridges or sector coverage).
1. Connector & Antenna Specifications
- Connector Type: The antenna ports on the bottom of the NWA55AXE are RP-SMA Female (which means any replacement antenna or extension cable must have an RP-SMA Male connector).
- Stock Antenna Gain:
- 2.4 GHz: 4 dBi
- 5 GHz: 5 dBi
- Type: Dual-band omnidirectional.
2. How to Change the Antennas
- Remove the Cover: Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the screw at the bottom of the NWA55AXE, then slide/remove the protective plastic cover.
- Unscrew Stock Antennas: Turn the stock antennas counterclockwise to unscrew them from the RP-SMA ports.
- Attach New Antennas/Cables: Screw your new dual-band antennas (or RP-SMA extension cables) clockwise onto the ports until they are firmly tightened.
- Weatherproofing (Crucial for Outdoor Use):
- The NWA55AXE has a downward-pointing port design to protect connections from direct rain.
- However, if you are running external RF cables to a remote directional antenna, ensure any connections outside the protective bottom cover are thoroughly wrapped with self-amalgamating waterproof tape to prevent moisture ingress.
- Re-attach the Cover: Guide any cables/wires properly, slide the cover back into place, and secure the screw.
