Configuration Loss After Firmware Upgrade (V4.8 to V5.0)

Configuration loss can occur when upgrading Zyxel XGS2220-30HP switch firmware from version V4.80 (ABXO.2) to V5.00 (ABXO.1). After upgrading and restarting, device settings may revert to default, although they are restored if the firmware is rolled back to V4.80. This issue primarily affects devices using configuration templates that include password complexity settings. During the system configuration restore process after the upgrade, an error message such as "error command: password complexity privilege 14" may be observed. This problem stems from a compatibility issue with the "Password complexity" setting in configuration templates. This feature is only supported in firmware version 5.0 and later. When a device running v4.8 receives a configuration template containing this setting, it misinterprets "complexity" as part of the password content, incorrectly generating the command password complexity privilege 14. Upon upgrading to v5.0, the system fails to recognize this malformed command, preventing the proper application of the configuration. To address this, two solutions are available based on your current device status:

• Solution 1: For Devices Still on Firmware V4.8

  • Before upgrading, connect to the device and execute the command: no password complexity privilege 14. This removes the incorrectly generated command.
  • Proceed with the firmware upgrade to V5.0.
  • After the upgrade is complete, re-enable the correct password complexity setting by executing: password complexity.

• Solution 2: Upgrade All Devices Before Applying Configuration Templates

  • Ensure all relevant devices are upgraded uniformly to firmware V5.0 or a later version.
  • Once all devices are on the compatible firmware, apply the configuration template to the switches. This approach prevents command parsing errors due to version discrepancies.
