What does a solid orange LED on my Wi-Fi access point mean?

1. The Physical LED on the Front/Top of the AP

On many Zyxel AP models, a solid or blinking orange/amber LED often indicates a power limitation or booting/connectivity state:

  • Power Restriction (Limited Power Mode): If the AP is receiving power via PoE but from a source that doesn't meet its maximum requirements (for example, receiving standard 802.3af PoE when the AP requires 802.3at PoE+), the AP may boot up but restrict its Wi-Fi capabilities (such as disabling specific bands or reducing antenna streams). The LED often turns solid amber or orange to flag this restricted mode.
  • Booting or Connecting: If the light alternates between orange and green, the AP is either booting up, attempting to obtain a DHCP IP address, or trying to establish a connection with the Nebula Control Center (NCC).

2. The Ethernet / Uplink Port LEDs (on the back/side of the AP)

If you are looking at the LEDs right next to where the Ethernet cable plugs in:

  • Lower Link Speed negotiated: This is very common.
    • Green LED: The port has negotiated its maximum supported speed (e.g., 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, or 5 Gbps depending on the AP model).
    • Amber/Orange LED: The port is operating at a lower speed than the maximum (e.g., negotiating 10/100 Mbps or 1 Gbps on a Multi-Gigabit AP).

3. The AP Status Icon in the Nebula Control Center (NCC)

If you are looking at your Nebula online dashboard and see an orange status icon for your AP:

  • Alert Status: This indicates that the AP has an alert. The most common reason is a degraded uplink speed (the AP is only negotiating a 10/100 Mbps connection to your switch instead of 1000 Mbps / 1 Gbps). You can hover your mouse over the orange icon in Nebula to see the exact alert message.
