GS1100/16 does not auto-negotiate with 2.5Gbit ethernet adapter

Hello everyone,

I have a GS1100/16 and I've been using it in my home network with 100Mbit and 1Gbit devices without any problems. I recently bought a mini pc with two 2.5Gbit ethernet ports and they won't negotiate with the switch unless I select 10Mbit full duplex mode, which is terribly slow :)

I have taken the following steps to figure out the problem:

  • Tried Different CAT6/CAT5e cables,
  • Tried both 2.5Gbit ports on the PC,
  • Tried different ports on the switch,

None of them worked.

I also tested the 2.5Gbit Ethernet ports on the PC with the LAN ports on my modem (1Gbit), they work and auto-negotiate at 1Gbit.

I know this switch is probably 10 years old tech-wise, but I want to know if there were any limitations for connections above 1Gbit with this switch. I do not think the switch is defective because it works fine with 1Gbit devices.

I look forward to hearing what you think.

Thank you

    Hi @agokhandemir

Our local testing, involving a Windows 11 system with an I226-V (on-board driver) connected to the ES1100-16 switch, showed negotiation at 100M. Given this result, along with your experience, it appears there may be a compatibility issue between the ES1100-16 (a 100M switch) and certain 2.5G devices.

To ensure optimal performance and to fully utilize 2.5G speeds in your network, we recommend considering a dedicated 2.5G switch such as the MG100 series.

    What make/model is the motherboard?

a driver update can fix this

  • The motherboard is not a known brand, but the ethernet adapters are Intel I226-V. I have the latest Intel Ethernet Driver Pack installed. They work with other network devices in my home network, it is just this switch.🙄

    Hello @agokhandemir

To assist you effectively with the GS1100-16 auto-negotiation issue, we'll need the switch's serial number. Please provide this information via the private message I sent.

    Thank you

  • Peter, thanks for the answer, but I already had this driver. However, I removed the existing driver and installed your driver, but nothing changed.

    Hello @agokhandemir

I have just received your information. However, the picture you provided showed the model name is ES1100-16, not GS1100-16. Could you please confirm the model name of your switch?

    Nami

  • Yes, It is ES1100-16 (without PoE ports). Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Hi @agokhandemir

To help resolve the auto-negotiation issue with your ES1100-16 switch, could you please check if the Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is activated on your PC?

If it is enabled, please try disabling EEE and unplugging the ethernet cable, then re-plugging it to test the connection again.

Let us know how it goes!

    Nami

  • Hello @Zyxel_Nami

I checked the advanced controller properties in Windows and EEE is already disabled.

When a cable is plugged in, the lights would flicker even before Windows boots, but that does not happen with my switch. I was curious because 2.5Gbit ports work just fine with a regular modem.

Anyway, I won't bother you anymore. Since it is an unmanaged switch, there is not much you can do.
