ZynOS wont accept DNS names in some syntax

Hi

It seems ZynOS V4.80(ABQF.4) | 08/23/2024 support to use a DNS name in the "timesync server" command but not in "syslog server".

I hereby ask you Zyxel staff for a future update as there is actually no reason at all to not allow a dns name in the "syslog server" command as well. Hard code IP:s where there is no need for it from any perspective should be subject for a change request in ZynOS. And here is that request :)

Tnx in advance
/Peo

    Hi @peos42,

Thanks for your input. Since users typically use a private Syslog server to collect logs, could you share your scenario?

    Hi

Well…No special scenario. It is just that I think it is resonable to be able to change IP:s behind the used DNS names in the IT environment. This so you can both skip the hunt to find all systems that uses the actual IP you are about to change, but also to skip login in to many systems and do reconfiguring.

Ok. if you have a good and well planned IT environment, you probably wont change IP:s that often (I do not say this should be a Zyxel priority change). But still… I do not understand why a DNS name is supported on just NTP in ZynOS and not syslog, because it is ok to use a IP for NTP too.

And of course, if you do not trust the DNS staff in your company, then you maybe do not want to have syslog sent to a dns name that could one day be sent to another system without your knowledge. But if you do not trust the DNS staff, there could be other potential security issues that is far worse than sending the syslog to the wrong place.

All posts here are not related to problems. This is not a problem, just a though that crossed my mind. Mostly related to ease of management. And the switch will still be a good one even if you deny this proposal :)
