Slow LAN speeds on VMG8825-T50 with 1000Mbps plan
Hi,
I am hoping to get some help with an issue I am seeing with slow LAN speeds on my Zyxel VMG8825-T50 router.
My internet plan is for 1000Mbps (1Gbps) and my WAN connection shows full speeds. However, my wired and wireless devices on the LAN are only getting around 94Mbps speeds.
From my research, it seems the VMG8825-T50 supports gigabit LAN ports. However in the router admin interface, I cannot find any settings to change the LAN port speed to 1000Mbps.
Things I have tried:
- Factory resetting the router
- Checking all related settings like QoS, NAT, WiFi channels etc.
My questions:
- How can I enable gigabit (1000Mbps) speeds on the LAN ports? Is there a setting I am missing?
- Would a different Zyxel router model allow this configuration if the speed cannot be changed?
- What other suggestions do you have to get my LAN devices to connect at speeds closer to my 1000Mbps internet plan?
Btw. I'm using a CAT 8 cable. So should be fine.
Thank you!

Hello @NvG
Welcome to the forum.
I cannot find in the user guide at https://download.zyxel.com/VMG8825-T50K/user_guide/VMG8825-T50K_V5.13_5.50.pdf any way to set the speeds of the LAN ports.
So I think that they are auto-negotiated for speed and duplex.
If you look at the System Information Detailed view screen in the Web Interface, see example below, then you should be able to see the speed that the LAN ports are working at.
If the LAN ports have all negotiated at 1Gbps, and are all active together, then you might have reached the backplane throughput capacity of the VMG8825-T50 router.
- I cannot find any statement as to what this is, but it could be slower than all of the LAN ports at full speed.
- I know from my CCNA studies that this is the case even with Cisco routers and switches.
I hope that this is helpful.
Kind regards,
Tony
PS: I don't have an answer to your questions 2 and 3.
But maybe you could go Small Business approach with Zyxel, see https://www.zyxel.com/uk/en-gb/solutions/organization-size/startup-small-business …
- for example the USG Flex 50 has a VPN throughput of 90Mbps and a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) throughput of 350Mbps.
- the USG Flex 100 has a VPN throughput of 270Mbps and an SPI throughput of 900Mbps.
