According to the user guide at https://download.zyxel.com/LTE5398-M904/user_guide/LTE5398-M904_EU_1.00_2.00%20Ed2.pdf I do not think that it is possible to upgrade via USB.

I think that you could try to get a USB to Ethernet adapter, so that you can connect by Ethernet.

Or you could try to connect by WiFi to do the upgrade.

@quordle Yes, before attempting the firmware update, make sure to backup any important data on your MacBook Air and ensure that the battery is sufficiently charged.
