There are two common cases when wireless clients cannot access the Internet:

Case 1: Clients fail to receive an IP address.

For Default VLAN Configurations:

Verify DHCP server status: Ensure that the DHCP server is active and IP address pool is not overloaded.

For specific VLAN configurations for wireless clients:

  1. Confirm SSID VLAN ID: Verify that the SSID name is associated with the correct VLAN ID. Navigate to Access Point > Configure > SSID Advanced Settings, select the SSID, and edit the VLAN ID.

2. Inspect switch port configuration: Check that the switch port to which the AP and gateway are connected is properly configured with the corresponding VLAN settings.

3. Check gateway VLAN interface: Ensure that the gateway is configured with the appropriate VLAN interface.

Case 2: Clients successfully obtain an IP address but still cannot access the Internet.

  1. Ping check:
  • Confirm and list the IP address of AP, Switches, Gateway that wireless clients are connected.
  • Use client to ping checks to identify where the point-of-failure is. Having the wireless client ping the following devices: AP, Switch, Gateway IP address and 8.8.8.8 (Internet).
  • Inspect network setting of device that wireless clients cannot successfully ping.

2. DNS check:

  • Use "nslookup" (or similar tools) on wireless clients to check if DNS server can resolve domain name of website you cannot access.
  • If domain name could not be resolved, manually change the wireless client's DNS server to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS)
