Scenario:

As a network engineer tasked with maintaining continuous Internet connectivity in an office, you possess a Mobile Router equipped with both an Ethernet WAN port and a SIM card slot. Your objective is to configure the router to seamlessly switch between Ethernet WAN and Cellular WAN (SIM card) to ensure uninterrupted Internet access in the event of a failure.

Pre-requisites:

  • A Mobile Router that supports Ethernet WAN port. (Refer to the FAQ to confirm compatibility)
  • A SIM card with active cellular data plans.

Configuration:

  • Navigate to Network Settings on the right-hand menu > Broadband > WAN backup
  • WAN Backup Enable: Switch the button to enable.
  • Primary WAN: Choose Ethernet or Cellular that decide the connection the mobile router would use first. This article uses Ethernet WAN as an example.
  • The Destination for Connection Check: Choose the suggested option or choose User defined site and type the IP address. This field to test the mobile router’s WAN accessibility.
  • Connection Check Interval: Type the number of seconds for the mobile router to wait between check, default as 60 seconds.
  • Check Fail Limit: Type the number of times, default as 3 times, that mobile router will ping the IP address configured in The Destination for Connection Check field without getting a response before switching to a WAN backup connection.

Verification:

To verify that the settings have been applied correctly, you can simulate an Internet failure on the primary WAN, Ethernet WAN for example, by removing it from Ethernet cable and check if the router switches to the Cellular WAN.
