Ok, another finding and it seems to be related to entware-ng.

in the post above I told that newly created shares are not visible via FTP, but visible via SMB.

so I disabled entware-ng and connected via WinSCP via FTP. voila! I can see all shares including new ones:

and File Browser now displays everything as expected

and then I did another test

    • i disabled entware-ng
    • i created a new share "testsharewithoutentwarengenabled" in the hope that may be it would be visible via FTP if created when entware-ng is disabled
    • i checked with disabled entware-ng via FTP - the share was visible
    • as soon as I enable entware-ng FTP does not show shares I created recently

so again I am not blaming SambaReplacement and my issue might be very unique to my screwed up configuration or a very old NAS325v2, but anyway this is an interesting finding.

what I would recommend to anyone is doing "Configuration Backup" as often as possible, because in my case it was part of a remedy. another part of a remedy was to manually remove two pid files blocking start of SAMBA in /opt/var/run as Mijzelf suggested
