The latest uOS update brings significant enhancements to firmware management, providing administrators with more control and flexibility. Key improvements include the ability to select the partition for booting, manual and cloud firmware uploads, and options for auto-reboot during auto-updates.

New Enhancements

  1. Partition Boot Selection
    • Users can now select which partition to boot up from. This feature is accessible via a CLI command that reveals the standby partition, displaying the version name and release date. Administrators can then choose the desired partition for booting.
  2. Cloud Firmware Update with Auto-Reboot Option
    • The update allows administrators to select whether the system should auto-reboot after an auto-update.
    • If the auto-reboot is disabled, the firewall will download and store the new firmware image and write the configuration to the standby partition. However, it will not reboot immediately. This means any configuration changes made after the auto-update but before the manual reboot will not be saved.

Enabling Partition Boot Selection

By default, the standby partition is hidden. To display it, use the CLI command:
usgflex700h> edit running
usgflex700h running config# gui system standby-firmware-display true
usgflex700h running config# commit

Once revealed, the web GUI will display the standby partition details, including the version name and release date. From there, administrators can select which partition to boot from.

Conclusion

The firmware management enhancements in uOS version 1.21 provide greater flexibility and control for administrators, allowing for more tailored and efficient firmware update processes. However, careful consideration is needed when disabling the auto-reboot option to ensure all desired configurations are preserved.
