Zyxel Networks has enhanced the capabilities of the NWA55AXE access point by adding support for full authentication services. This update brings significant improvements to this small business access point, now classified under the "Simplicity AP" category.

Key Updates

  1. Expanded Authentication Options:
    • Previously, the NWA55AXE supported only open and WPA Personal authentication methods.
    • With the new update, it now supports WPA Enterprise and all captive portal options, providing a full range of security and authentication features.
  2. Addressing Market Demands:
    • The decision to expand the authentication capabilities was driven by customer demand for more robust security options in outdoor environments.
    • The NWA55AXE now bridges the gap between the basic NWA55AXE and the more advanced WAX655E, offering a mid-tier solution for outdoor use.

Firmware Requirement

  • Version 7.00:
    • To access the new authentication features, users must upgrade their NWA55AXE to firmware version 7.00.

NCC Integration

  • Site Configuration:
    • Previously, sites with only the NWA55AXE could configure only open and WPA Personal options.
    • Now, all authentication options are available, even if the site contains only NWA55AXE devices.
  • Mixed AP Environments:
    • In sites with both NWA50AX and NWA55AXE devices, NCC can push configurations to both APs.
    • If a configuration includes features unsupported by the NWA50AX (e.g., WPA Enterprise), the SSID will be disabled on the NWA50AX but will remain active on the NWA55AXE.

Conclusion

The enhanced authentication services for the NWA55AXE significantly improve its functionality, making it a versatile choice for small businesses needing secure and flexible outdoor networking solutions. With firmware version 7.00, users can now leverage full WPA Enterprise and captive portal capabilities, ensuring robust security across their networks.
