A WiFi6 capable device may connect to a WiFi5 band for several reasons:

Configuration: Ensure the AP's 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio mode is properly configured to 802.11ax.

Driver or Firmware: Outdated drivers on the device may prevent or having problem with WiFi6 connections. Update to latest firmware for optimal performance.

Device connection preferred settings: Devices preference settings usually default set to auto for better adjust or transmit in order to prevent connection issue, you can fix it in ax mode.
