Feature Request: Sync Port Names from Nebula to Local Device for SNMP Usability

Dear Zyxel Team,

dear Community,

I’d like to submit a feature request based on a recent support case (Ticket #506313).

Current Situation:

When configuring port names in the Nebula Control Center (NCC), these names are not pushed to the local switch. As a result, SNMP queries (e.g., via SNMPwalk) do not reflect the port names defined in Nebula. Instead, only names configured directly on the switch are visible via SNMP.

Use Case:

This creates a significant limitation for network monitoring:

If an admin defines meaningful interface descriptions in Nebula (e.g., “Printer Room Port” or “Uplink 1st Floor”), these are not available to SNMP-based monitoring tools like Checkmk, LibreNMS, etc.

Instead, the tools receive only generic interface names like “port1”, which defeats the purpose of central configuration via Nebula.

Zyxel Support Confirmation:

Support confirmed that this is not a bug, but by design:

“When you change the hostname via Nebula, it is correctly pushed to the switch. However, this is currently not the case for port names.”

They also advised me to submit this as a feature request.

Request:

Please allow for port names configured in Nebula to be synced to the local device – or at least make them accessible via SNMP (e.g., via a proprietary OID or in the interface description field).

This would significantly enhance the usability of Nebula-managed networks in professional monitoring setups.

all the best

Valentin
