"Existing user protection" is a feature found within the "Captive portal advance setting" section, often in network configuration interfaces like the Zyxel Nebula Control Center. This setting is designed to safeguard existing Wi-Fi client logins. When activated, it prevents new Wi-Fi clients from logging in once the "Simultaneous login limit" has been reached, unless that limit is set to "Unlimited"

Simultaneous login limits define how many endpoint devices can use a single account at the same time. The default Nebula behavior is to "kick all" existing clients when a new device attempts to authenticate with an account that has reached its limit.

By enabling "Existing User Protection," the system keeps all current clients connected and prevents any new devices from authenticating until an existing session expires or is manually cleared. New users will receive a warning message stating that the user has already logged in via other devices.

In simpler terms, if a network has a cap on how many devices can be connected at once, and that cap is met, "existing user protection" ensures that those already connected devices remain online by blocking any new devices from joining. This helps maintain service for current users.
