When PTP APs are managed by Nebula, we recommend the following steps to build a mesh:

  1. At your desk, first connect both PTP APs to Nebula.
  2. Confirm that both APs show a configuration status of "Up to date" and are running the latest firmware. At the same time, configure the related wireless and smart mesh settings.
  3. Power up the AP that will act as the repeater without it obtaining an IP address. The Ethernet cable on the repeater AP's uplink port must provide power only and must not provide an IP address.
  4. In Nebula, confirm that the AP intended to be the repeater has changed to the repeater role and has connected to the root AP.
  5. Move the root AP and the repeater AP to their planned installation locations.
  6. The Ethernet cable on the root AP's uplink port must provide power and be able to provide an IP address. The Ethernet cable on the repeater AP's uplink port must provide power only and must not provide an IP address. (If the AP intended to be the repeater obtains an IP address, it will not change to repeater mode.)

For an AP to transition into a "Repeater" role and search for its wireless uplink, it must not detect a valid path to the gateway or Internet via its Ethernet port.
* If AP is connected to a switch that has a wired route to the router/Internet, the AP will consider itself a "Root AP" and will refuse to establish a wireless uplink.
* Ensure AP is either powered strictly via a PoE injector with its LAN port disconnected, or connected to a local switch that is completely isolated from the wired network gateway.
