How do you wake the external drive (connected via usb)?

Having the disks spinning all the time is not bad for your disks. They wear faster by spinning down and up regularly (and the temperature variations caused by that) than by spinning all the time.Having said that, I think the problem is in your USB disk controller. It gets a sleep command after some time, fails to handle that properly. There is a work around, but it needs some command line work. By deleting the device node of the usb disk the sleep daemon fails to send that command. This way you can exclude specific disks from sleeping.

You are welcome. Same to you as well. I might ended up spending $$$ for the hard drives I needed. LOL! I'll hold out until the next pay check thou, if I can. Or at least close to the time I get pay.0
