Hi,

I need to power an edge switch that can use passive PoE as its power source, can the XMG1915-18EP support passive PoE?

I would like to avoid using a PoE injector but if the XMG1915-18EP does not support passive PoE can it be added if it is not a feature available today? Alternatively I may just be missing something in the config of the switch!

cheers

    Hi @clarkyjp,

    Thank you for your inquiry.

Unfortunately, our XMG1915-18EP does not support Passive PoE. Since passive PoE is a non-standard power method, it is not configurable or enabled solely via firmware. Regarding your request, we will check to confirm whether the XMG1915-18EP can support this type of power delivery in the future.

To better assist you, could you kindly share the model of the edge switch you're planning to connect?

    Hi,

That is a real shame as the feature is available on very cheap switches and adds flexibility! I am surprised a relatively expensive (for a home user) switch does not have it.

My use case was to power a Mikrotik edge switch which accepts passive PoE on port 1, I was powering this with a PoE injector on its uplink port but this was not as elegant as I wanted. I recently installed the Zyxel switch in place of another Mikrotik switch as it had PoE but not basics like passive PoE as it turns out!

I think adding passive PoE to the feature set would be a fantastic addition!

    Hi @clarkyjp,

    Thank you for your reply.

We understand your situation and appreciate your feedback. Could you please provide the model name of the MikroTik switch you're trying to power?

Additionally, the XMG1915-18EP has a feature called "Force 802.3at", which may help in your scenario.
You can try navigating to PORT > PoE Setup > PoE Setup, and set the Power-up Mode to Force 802.3at.
