How to resolve the low throughput despite strong signal?

When the signal is strong (recommended –70dBm or above) but clients still couldn't operate at an acceptable throughput, you can refer to these tips to fine-tune your wireless environment.

  1. Going to Access point > Configure > Radio settings

Deployment selection and Maximum output power

Select the Deployment selection according to your number of APs or adjust your 2.4GHz radio power to 5dBm lower than your 5GHz radio at least 5dBm. It helps the client is easy to connect to 5GHz that less interference, and up to 25 channels are available and non-overlapped.

Channel width

Narrow channel width to minimize co-channel interference on each radio.

DCS setting

Do DCS setting to ensure the AP can have the best channel.

  • Enable DCS schedule to let AP choose better channel for the day
  • Disable "DCS client aware" to let the AP jump to the better channel when the DCS work and there are still clients connect to AP.
  • Disable "Avoid 5G DFS channel" to let the AP have more options to prevent channel interference.

Limit legacy clients

When legacy clients including 802.11a/b/g are connecting to APs, the total wireless performance drops because they transmit packets in low rate, especially in high density environment. Allow 802.11ax/ac/n stations only function to restrict 802.11a/b/g clients connecting to Nebula device.

WLAN Rate Control

Increase your WLAN rate control for 2.4GHz to 5.5Mbps, while 5Ghz to 12Mbps. The higher rate is set, the shorter transmission period can be achieved because less airtime will be occupied by management frames.

Smart steering

Enable Smart steering to let the AP kick the station when it still sticks with the AP with lower signal. And steer it to another AP with better signal.

2. Going to Devices > Access points > Click to choose AP > Device page > Status > Storm control

Broadcast/multicast storm control

Enable Broadcast Storm Control and Multicast Storm Control on both the AP and switch port that the AP is connected to. Storm Control is to limit the broadcast or multicast packets amount per second (pps). Enable the storm control on access point will drop ingress packets on uplink port to release more airtime to transmit data.
